TYPO3 Relaunch: Process, Pitfalls and Checklist
    Short answer
A TYPO3 relaunch pays off when the site is several versions behind, the design is outdated, or editors struggle with the structure. The process covers inventory, concept, design, migration, redirects and launch. The most common mistakes are missing 301 redirects, unreviewed legacy content and involving editors too late. With a URL list, a clean redirect plan and testing on staging, rankings are preserved.

When a TYPO3 Relaunch Makes Sense

Not every old TYPO3 site needs a relaunch. Sometimes an upgrade to the current LTS is enough. A relaunch makes sense when at least one of these applies:
    • The site runs on TYPO3 11 or older and has many custom extensions. The upgrade effort approaches a rebuild.
    • Design and brand presence no longer fit the company.
    • Editors work with workarounds because content elements are missing or the structure grew instead of being planned.
    • The site is slow, not accessible, or hard to use on mobile.
Since April 2026, TYPO3 14 LTS is the recommended version for new projects, with free security updates until June 2029. [1] A relaunch today should build on it directly.

    The Process in Six Steps

Redirects decide whether rankings survive the relaunch.
    1. Inventory: capture all URLs, content, extensions, integrations and traffic. Which pages bring visitors, which bring nobody?
    2. Concept: plan the new page structure, roles, content elements and keywords. Deliberately keep, rework or drop legacy content.
    3. Design: component system based on the corporate design, accessible and mobile-first.
    4. Migration: transfer content, partly automated, partly editorially reworked.
    5. Redirects: every old URL gets a matching new target via 301 redirect.
    6. Launch: switch over, check Search Console, watch error pages, train editors.

    The Most Common Pitfalls

    PitfallConsequenceBetter
No redirectsRankings and backlinks are lost301 plan for every relevant URL
Copy everything 1:1Old problems move alongReview and trim content first
Involve editors too lateNew backend is not acceptedLet them test early, train them
Keep extensions uncheckedUpgrade problems from day oneCheck each extension for necessity
Launch without staging testErrors only show up liveFull test on a copy
    Kernaussage
A relaunch is the best opportunity to clean up. Every page you do not migrate is a page you never have to maintain again. But every old URL needs a target.

    Launch Day Checklist

    • All 301 redirects active and spot-checked
    • Sitemap resubmitted, Search Console connected
    • Title and description set for all key pages
    • Forms, search and language switch tested
    • Tracking and cookie consent working
    • Backups and monitoring set up
The most critical part of a relaunch is the least spectacular: a spreadsheet of old and new URLs. Keep it clean and you lose hardly any visibility during the switch.

    Frequently asked questions

    How long does a TYPO3 relaunch take?+
A company website usually takes ten to sixteen weeks. Large portals with lots of content and integrations take longer.
Will I lose my Google rankings in a relaunch?+
Not if every relevant old URL points to a matching new page via 301 redirect and content does not disappear without replacement.
Relaunch or upgrade, which is better?+
An upgrade is enough if structure and design still fit. If several versions lie in between or the presence no longer fits, a relaunch is often more economical.
    Can content be migrated automatically?+
Partly. Pages and content elements can often be transferred automatically but should be reviewed and reworked editorially.
Do I have to stay with TYPO3 in a relaunch?+
No. A relaunch is the right moment to review the system. Depending on requirements, WordPress, Webflow or Lovable may fit better.
    What does a TYPO3 relaunch cost?+
With us, a relaunch with migration starts at around €30,000. Number of pages, languages, integrations and custom extensions determine the effort.
    What is a 301 redirect?+
A permanent redirect from an old to a new URL. It tells search engines the page has moved and passes on its signals.
