SEO audit: process, scope and cost
What an SEO audit checks, how long it takes, what it costs and how to recognise an audit that actually helps.

An SEO audit is the inventory that comes before any optimisation. It answers three questions: what is technically blocking your visibility, which content has potential, and in which order the work pays off. Everything else is decoration.
What an SEO audit actually is
An audit examines your site from the perspective of search engines and users. Four areas are reviewed, and they depend on each other:
- Technology. Can Google find, crawl and index every important page?
- Content. Does each page cover its own search intent, or do pages cannibalise each other?
- Authority. Which domains link to you, and is the profile healthy?
- Competition. Who ranks for what, and where is the gap small enough for a realistic attack?
Only the combination gives a picture. A technically perfect site without content ranks as poorly as an excellent text on a page that is never indexed.
The process in six steps
1. Clarify goals and audience
Without a goal there is no prioritisation. We establish upfront which services make money, which regions matter and which enquiries you want more of. An audit for a local service business looks different from one for a national shop.
2. Full crawl of the site
A complete crawl shows status codes, redirect chains, titles, descriptions, canonicals, internal links and orphan pages. The hard errors surface here: pages set to noindex that should rank, or pages in the index nobody should see.
3. Compare against real data
The crawl shows what is theoretically possible. Search Console shows what actually happens: impressions, clicks, average positions, indexing issues. The comparison produces the most important list of the audit, the pages sitting between position 4 and 15. They deliver results faster than any new article.
4. Content and keyword analysis
Every relevant URL gets one main keyword. Duplicates are resolved, gaps marked. At the same time the cluster plan emerges: which topic island already exists, which is missing, which articles support which landing page.
5. Competition and backlinks
We look at who ranks for your target terms, how deep those pages are and how strong the domains behind them. That decides whether a term is reachable in six months or not at all. For the link profile, anomalies matter more than volume, for example bought links from networks.
6. Prioritisation and handover
The result is a table of measures with effort, expected impact and ownership, plus a session where we walk through the ten most important points. No 80-page PDF nobody reads.

What an SEO audit costs
| Scope | Price range | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| Compact audit, up to 50 URLs | 1,500 – 2,200 € | Small company sites, local service businesses |
| Standard audit, up to 300 URLs | 2,200 – 3,500 € | SMEs with a blog and several service pages |
| Extensive audit, 300+ URLs | 3,500 – 4,500 € | Shops, portals, multilingual sites |
Page count, number of languages, shop logic and competitor analysis drive the range. Combining the audit with implementation saves money because the analysis is part of the first project phase anyway. How SEO costs break down overall is covered in SEO costs.

The checks follow Google's own requirements for indexable websites [1].
How long an audit takes
Expect one to two weeks from go-ahead to presentation. The crawl itself is done in a day, the time goes into evaluation and prioritisation. Plan another two to four weeks for the first quick wins.
The most expensive audit is the one that sits in a folder. That is why we hand over tasks with owners and dates, not files.
How to recognise a good audit
- It names priorities, not completeness. A hundred findings without order are worthless.
- It separates errors from improvements. A missing alt attribute is not an emergency, a blocked robots.txt is.
- It accounts for your team. Measures nobody can implement need a reason or removal.
- It is verifiable. Every statement has a source: crawl, Search Console, log file or competitive comparison.
- It answers what happens in the next 30 days.
Do it yourself or hire someone?
A rough self-check is possible and sensible: review Search Console for indexing errors, look at PageSpeed scores, read your own titles, search for duplicate content. That covers the obvious.
An external audit pays off when rankings drop without a visible reason, a relaunch is planned, several languages or locations are involved, or nobody internally has time. Before a website relaunch it is almost always the cheaper decision, because lost rankings cost more than any analysis.
After the audit
The audit is the beginning, not the result. Typically a quick-win phase of two to four weeks follows, then topic clusters and continuous measurement. Local businesses add the local SEO block, because map search and business profiles follow their own rules.
Conclusion
An SEO audit costs money and saves more. It prevents budget flowing into content that will never rank on a broken foundation, and it shows the pages where a few hours of work make the biggest difference. If you want to know where your site stands, our SEO audit is built for exactly that, and the SEO agency in Cologne handles implementation on request.
